New impetus for Czech winter tourism

Together with Czech construction firm BAK, LEITNER ropeways is implementing a
4-person cableway on the 1,602 metre mountain that will be accessible by 2014. For LEITNER, this is a particularly attractive project since the popular peak is one of the most important tourist destinations in the country.

At 1,602 metres, Sněžka is not only the highest point in the Krkonoše, but also in the Sudetes range and indeed the whole country. Over the centuries, the mountain has become one of the most significant tourist attractions in the Czech Republic. The first to make the ascent was supposedly a Venetian merchant searching for precious stones in 1456. Prussian kings and later US President John Quincy Adams have also been among those to set foot on the Sněžka. Today, this mountain on the Czech-Polish border is one of the most popular excursion destinations in the region, with its meteorological observatory, famous Post Office, the St. Lawrence Chapel and delicious local gastronomy.
Sněžka is a popular place to visit in both summer and winter, and this high level of interest will of course be taken into account with the new cable car. As part of an open tendering process, LEITNER ropeways has been awarded the contract to build a 3.7 kilometre GD4 cable car together with Czech construction company BAK. The project has been commissioned by the Czech town of Pec pod Sněžkou with a budget of approximately 13 million Euros.

New cableway to start in March 2014
The new cable way - anticipated to start operating in March 2014 - will depart from Pec pod Sněžkou to the Sněžka in two sections. Travelling at a speed of 5 m/sec, the gondolas will reach the mountain station on the peak in just over twelve minutes. The new system will be built as a replica: the supports will be modelled on their 50-year-old predecessors and constructed on precisely the same alignment.
For LEITNER ropeways, this project also has particular strategic significance: Sněžka enjoys great touristic relevance in the Czech Republic, and the cableway is the most important of its kind throughout the Krkonoše, enjoying a long tradition. The Eastern European market has distinct local value thanks to its strong potential for growth. “That’s why we believe the new gondola will represent a valuable point of reference for further businesses,” says Oliver Kirchheim, sales manager for LEITNER ropeways.
